What are the houses in earthquake risk? Many will have asked themselves this question, especially after the tragedy in Emilia Romagna. Although 45% of the Italian territory is very high earthquake risk, we continue to build and renovate by violating the anti-seismic legislation.

The Italian legislation establishes a whole series of principles to be respected to design, build and testing buildings that can withstand natural disasters just like earthquakes.

How much does it cost to build one anti-seismic house?

Once the seismic risk of the site, the building is constructed which must have precise safety requirements in order to avoid collapses or disruptions following a possible seismic wave.
The construction material used is reinforced concrete: it must be equipped with an internal reinforcement of carbon steel or stainless steel bars, with a minimum diameter of 5 mm. The pillars and beams must also be made of internal steel bars and bolts and nails conforming to European standards must be used for welding. The load-bearing walls must have a thickness between a minimum of 15 cm and a maximum of 50 cm.

There are also height restrictions, for example, in a home with a rating of seismic risk 1 the two floors should never be exceeded. As for the roofs, it is necessary to avoid the pushing ones, that is roofs made with beams that push towards the walls, and instead have truss roofs built with a load-bearing structure capable of supporting the sloping roof covering. Once the construction of such a building is completed, it must be evaluated through a series of acceptance tests: they must be able to withstand any tension, vibration and torsion.

Wood, given its flexibility, is also considered as a building material for anti-seismic houses. Building a wooden house can be an excellent eco-sustainable alternative: it improves our life and diminishes ours impact on the environment. Attention, even wooden houses must comply with anti-seismic regulations based on the level of risk of the territory.
